CALL FOR PAPERS  ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Statute Law Society will hold a Conference in May/June 2025 to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Report, The Preparation of Legislation, Cmnd. 6053, which was prepared by a committee chaired by The Rt Hon. Sir David (later Lord) Renton. The Report was a response to concerns that legislation was unnecessarily complex, for example because its language was often obscure and relevant provisions were sometimes scattered across several Acts of Parliament, thus making the law hard to identify and track down.

The Conference will consider the impact of the Report and its recommendations, together with the implications for legislation and the law-making process of changes in the legal landscape and the UK constitution during the last 50 years.

Alongside invited speakers, the Society hopes that a number of other people will deliver papers on a theme broadly related to legislation and the law-making process. Previous conferences of the Society have included presentations by scholars, legal practitioners and graduate students with an interest in legislation.
The Society therefore invites anyone interested in delivering a paper at the Conference to submit an abstract of the proposed paper by email to statutelawsociety@gmail.com no later than 30 June 2024.

The abstract should be no more than 500 words long and the email should be headed “Renton Conference 2025”. The Council of the Society will review all submissions and will reply to those whose papers have been accepted for presentation at the conference by 31 July 2024.
